This course serves as a first introduction to the related fields of oil refining and petrochemistry. Basic notions of thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical reaction/reactor engineering and catalysis are assumed to be mastered.

The first lecture will concentrate on introducing the complexity of this important industrial segment where economics, politics, environmental awareness… mix with science and engineering; these industrial activities have also a direct impact on our everyday lives. Then the role of a refinery will be defined as a toolkit to balance supply of oil with demand for specific products.

Three different catalytic process types will be illustrated in detail:

   1)   Hydrotreating processes: HDS, HDN, HDM are specifically designed to reduce heteroatoms (S, N, Metals) down to levels strictly regulated (10 ppm S for instance) while leaving other properties constant

   2)   Milld conversion processes: these change very little the molecular weight of the feedstocks and promote isomerization or aromatization (Hydroisomerization and Reforming) in order to meet fuel specifications (octane number of gasoline) and generate H2

   3)   Deep conversion processes: these (FCC, Hydrocracking) dramatically reduce the molecular weight of heavy oil fractions to produce mostly transportation fuels (gasoline, kerosene, gasoil)

Each of these families of processes illustrate the 3 major types of catalytic processes used in oil refining and chemical processing in general (fixed beds with extrudates, moving beds with spherical catalysts, fluidized beds with microspheres).

Other emerging processes will also be discussed allowing a broadening of the feedstocks (natural gas, coal and biomass): Fischer-Tropsch, MTG/O, HDO... Finally the problem of H2 balance in modern refineries will be discussed.

In petrochemistry, the accent will be put on the generation and use of olefins and aromatics and the synergies with oil refining. A great deal of these catalytic processes will be zeolite based.

This course is designed for graduate students and extensive class participation is requested; it will be given in a style similar to the internal formations given in oil and catalyst companies. It can prepare interested students for more specific training (work in a refinery environment) or as a solid background for fundamental and applied research in catalysis.
